FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

COMPANY

HOW LONG HAS BOLTHOUSE FARMS® BEEN AROUND?

The Bolthouse family began commercial vegetable farming in western Michigan in 1915. From the very beginning, the company was known for quality and innovation. After more than 90 years of farming and distributing premium, fresh produce, Bolthouse Farms added a state of the art bottling facility in fall of 2002. This new facility allowed Bolthouse to produce premium quality beverages as well. In 2007, Bolthouse added another state-of-the-art facility to produce premium, refrigerated dressings.

IS BOLTHOUSE FARMS® REALLY A FARM?

It really is! We have big fields, lots of tractors, and specialized farming equipment.

JUICE

WHAT IS "FLASH PASTEURIZATION"?

This process quickly heats the juice to kill potentially harmful microorganisms and then quickly cools the juice, all in a matter of seconds. This form of pasteurizing our juice allows us to provide you with a safe product, without losing the wonderful taste of the juice.

WHERE IS YOUR JUICE MADE?

We make our juice daily in our state-of-the-art bottling facility located in the San Joaquin Valley of California.

IS YOUR JUICE PERISHABLE?

Yes! Our juice must be kept refrigerated below 41°F at all times.

HOW LONG CAN YOUR JUICE BE CONSUMED ONCE OPEN?

Once the bottle is opened, our juice should be consumed within 7-10 days. Always store juice below 41° F in a refrigerator.

IS THERE ANY VITAMIN LOSS DURING THE JUICING PROCESS?

Some nutrients degrade due to heat during the "Flash Pasteurization" process. Our cold fill production method enables us to limit the amount of heat treatments during bottling, so you get the highest nutritional value and freshest taste possible while still ensuring the safety of our product.

WHERE CAN I RECYCLE YOUR BOTTLE?

Bolthouse juice bottles can be recycled anywhere that accepts P.E.T. #1 plastics.

WHERE CAN I FIND YOUR PRODUCT?

Bolthouse Farms® beverages can be found in the refrigerated produce section of your local grocery store. (Please see our "Store Locator" for help finding stores near you.)

DO YOUR BEVERAGES CONTAIN GLUTEN (A PROTEIN FOUND IN WHEAT AND OTHER GRAINS)?

DO YOU USE MSG IN YOUR BEVERAGES? WHAT IS MSG?

No, we do not use MSG in our beverages. MSG (monosodium glutamate) is a compound of glutamic acid and is used as a flavor enhancer.

DO YOUR 100% JUICES CONTAIN ANY TABLE OR REFINED SUGAR?

In our 100% juices, we only use fruit juice as a natural sweetener.

ARE ANY OF YOUR PROTEIN DRINKS MADE WITH MILK CONTAINING RBGH (RECOMBINANT BOVINE GROWN HORMONE)?

CARROT

How are baby-cut carrots grown?

We plant seeds bred for their sweet taste, small core, and optimal color/vitamin content. We harvest them while they're still young and tender.

Are the carrots really "baby" carrots or are they cut from larger carrots?

Baby-cut carrots are cut and peeled from larger carrots for greater convenience. Immature carrots would lack flavor, because flavor develops as carrots mature before harvest.

Can I eat the carrots right out of the bag?

Yes. They are washed and ready to be eaten.

Do you add something to make the carrots so sweet?

No. The sweetness of our carrots is all natural.

Do you add preservatives to your carrots?

No.

Should I keep Bolthouse Farms® carrots in the fridge?

Yes. Our carrots are chilled before they are bagged and they stay refrigerated until you buy them. We recommend keeping them refrigerated.

Can the carrots be frozen?

Yes, but frozen carrots may become soggy upon thawing. It is fine to cook them after freezing.

Where are the baby-cut carrots grown?

While the majority of our carrots are grown in California, we also use seasonal carrots from Georgia, Washington, and Ontario, Canada.

Why do my carrots sometimes turn whitish?

Carrots are a root, meaning they either want to store water or supply it. In the refrigerator, they try to supply it. Soak them in a bowl of icy water for a few minutes and the whiteness should fade.

Are your carrots genetically modified?

No, we do not use any carrots that have been produced through biotechnology.

DRESSING

Why did you choose yogurt to make your creamy salad dressings?

Yogurt is naturally lower in fat and calories than mayonnaise, which is the leading ingredient in most refrigerated dressings. Yogurt is highly nutritious because it is a good source of calcium and protein.

Which flavors are Kosher?

Classic Ranch, Thousand Island, Honey Mustard, Zesty French, and Salsa Ranch. (Please note that none of our dressings are Kosher for Passover).

Why is your shelf life shorter than some other refrigerated dressings?

Since we use fresh yogurt as the base for our dressings, our dressings have less oil and fat than many other refrigerated creamy dressings. Oil and fat can limit the amount of water activity in a dressing, and thus act as preservatives.

Do your dressings contain any trans fats?

No, none of our dressings contain any trans fat.

Do your dressings contain MSG?

No, we do not use MSG in our dressings. MSG (monosodium glutamate) is a compound of glutamic acid and is used as a flavor enhancer.

Do your dressings contain any table or refined sugar?

Our dressings are sweetened with apple juice from concentrate or reduced acid pineapple juice from concentrate.

Do any of your dressings contain gluten?

All our dressings are gluten free.

Why are your dressings in plastic instead of glass?

For several reasons. 1) Safety. Glass is heavier and can break much easier than the PET plastic used in our dressings. 2) Convenience. Plastic bottles are easy to lift, handle, and pour. 3) Better food safety for consumers. Glass bottles are not built to handle utensils, which are often used with dressings in jars. 4) Plastic is better for transportation. There are fewer broken bottles and less weight per bottle, so trucks can transport more bottles. As a result, we reduce the number of trucks on the road.

Are the bottles recyclable?

Yes. The bottles can be recycled anywhere that accepts P.E.T. #1 plastics.
